IHG Signs First Voco Hotel In Southeast Asia

Inter Continental Hotels Group has recently signed a management agreement with B&G Park Company Limited for their new convenient hotel in Sukhumvit, a new property in Bangkok, Thailand, part of the recently launched voco brand; the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.

Set to open in 2021, the voco Bangkok Sukhumvit 11 will have 300 guest rooms, as well as offering a wide range of food and entertainment options, on top of granting easy access to the city itself via the nearby Nana BTS Station, located nearby.

Other facilities include a swimming pool with poolside bar, as well as a fitness centre, among others. There’ll also be meeting facilities in the property, able to hold up to 400 guests, with the largest meeting room accounting for half of that capacity.

The voco brand, taken from the Latin word meaning ‘to invite’, was launched in June 2018. It’s a global brand with the backing that means, sporting the informality and charm of individual hotels. The signing of the new convenient hotel in Sukhumvit follows the recent opening of the first voco property in the world; voco Gold Coast in Australia, which opened in November.

Managing Director Southeast Asia & Korea IHG, Clarence Tan, made a statement on the matter, saying that, being the world’s most visited destination, Bangkok is a great launch market for the voco brand, one of their newest additions to their portfolio. The signing, he says, will continue the growth the brand since its launch, and that IHG is excited to bring its offerings to travellers.

The local Bangkok company that’ll handle the property, B&G Estate Co., Ltd. owns and operates retail and corporate properties, like Interchange 21, and has plans to expand its hospitality portfolio.

Managing Director for B&G Estate Co., Ltd. commented on the new partnership, saying that the company is excited to work with IHG, a trusted partner, in order to launch the first voco property in Southeast Asia. They say that they believe that the new brand will appeal to both professionals and leisure-seekers, particularly those who’re looking for a vibrant, sustainable and dependable choice, and they are confident that voco Bangkok Sukhumvit 11 will be warmly received when it finally opens in 2021.

Bangkok Welcomes New Observation Deck

There are many buildings in Thailand including family hotels in Bangkok which cements the city’s reputation as a budding metropolitan. There are tall buildings everywhere in the capital that developers are aiming to beat the tallest ones in order to create a new milestone. For MahaNakhon, the completion of the observation deck by the developer Buro Ole Scheerenmeans they have bagged the title of the second tallest building in the entire kingdom.

MahaNakhom, a local name pertaining to great metropolis, is composed of 77 storeys. It takes a pixilated form and the design has cuboid cutaways which continue upward in order to complete its facades.

According to Ole Scheeren who is Buro Ole Scheeren’s principal, the main idea for the construction of the skyscraper is to embody the city life in Bangkok and showcase it in the form of a tower which exudes a dramatic effect with a movement that spirals.

The building of MahaNakhon, with a final height of 314 meters, took home the title of the tallest building in Thailand when it was first launched in 2015. A residential tower with height higher than one meter was then constructed which snatched the title away from the skyscraper.

At the top of the building is an observation deck with glass floors. This gives the viewers a chance to see the entire city of Bangkok in 360 views.

Scheeren said that the observation deck at the very top of the building was intended to be used by the public so that human activity is not only at the ground floor but at the entire length of the skyscraper from bottom up to the top.

At the beginning of the project, it was intended to be an integral part of the city as well as the public and the creation of the observation deck was a testament to that proclamation.

The observation deck called Skytray can be visited by guests at family hotels in Bangkok which gives them direct view of the ground which is over 300 meters from the top. The entire glass platform’s dimension is 4.5 meters by 17.5 meters.

Savannah Airport Commission Approves Uber

The Airport Commission of Savannah, Georgia has just approved an agreement that allows private airport transfers at the Savanna-Hilton Head International Airport via the smartphone-based application Uber.

Uber is a mobile application developed by Uber Technologies in California. It is for smartphone users to use their mobile phones to submit a trip request which is then routed to Uber drivers who use their own cars. As of May 28, 2015, Uber is available in 58 countries and about 300 cities worldwide.

Lori Lynah, an airport spokesman, says that they had prepared for Uber in Savannah since it was only a matter of time before they integrate Uber into their airport transfer services as many other states have already going through the same process. Since many passengers coming to Savannah are from large cities wherein Uber was already operating, people are already familiar with it.

She further said that if Uber were to operate in Savannah, they had to operate in the way the Airport Commission wanted them to.

The agreement is already pending for the approval of pending. Even so, the Airport Commission has already planned to designate a part of the lower area for the Uber pick-up area. Moreover, they are not to be allowed to roam around the airport premises like taxi drivers looking for fares.

However, taxi drivers have found these restrictions useless. Robert Dumm, who has been driving a taxi cab for 20 years, says that the idea of Uber is troubling on their part since their vehicles had to go through inspections while the drivers had to go through background checks and had to procure badges to operate at the airport. Taxi drivers have to go through all of the above while Uber drivers did not.

Dumm believes that Uber may put them out of business as it is a cheaper alternative especially in times when the taxi cab business is at its lowest points in terms of profits. However, Lynah says that there is not yet an assurance that Uber fares will be cheaper than taxi rides. Uber merely provides the passenger another option and an alternative to taxi cabs.

While the citizens of Savannah are already raving about Uber, taxi cab drivers are already fearing that they would be out of business in only a few months past the coming of Uber.
